Joshua Zero
zerocore
Joshua: ‘The record was written as a way of introducing myself to the world, I wanted it to be like a starting point for all the music I have inside me.’ This is clear in songs like "is this what you wanted" where Joshua interpolates images of themself and their gender. Joshua identifies as non-binary and has used he/they pronouns for the last 4 years.
However, the album also deals with darker themes. The song ‘zerocore 3’ features a passage from JG Ballards ‘Crash’. The song was recorded and added separately following a car crash on tour in Nov 2023, a near-death experience and long, painful recovery for Joshua. The song features a belting and gut-wrenching auto-tuned voice screaming in the final section of the song, wordlessly expressing Joshua's lived experience.
“The crash changed my life, I had to put everything on hold, including a short film I was making to come out with the album. Had things been different, this album could have never come out., and that haunts me deeply. To think that none of my music would have existed in the world, and that my life could change so quickly. Nothing can prepare you for such a thing” However, film project aside, the memory of the event has done nothing but cement Joshua Zero’s dedication to music. On crutches, they have continued to relentlessly tour and performed across the country, in the UK as well as Germany, Czechia, Austria, Poland, Switzerland and more to promote the album to people on the ground.
