Møster
Springs
Møster! is announcing their 6th full length album, four years after their critically acclaimed Dust Breathing (Hubro, 2020)
A diverse reference pallette has been a trade mark of all Møster! releases, but now the various sources of inspiration has been morphed into the most wholesome album by the Norwegian quartet so far.
An urge to dive further into studio production possibilities emerged during the time since Dust Breathing, so Jørgen Træen was asked to take on an even more comprehensive role this time, as recording engineer, producer, and also to do the mix and mastering, given freedom to manipulate and add musical elements to the compositions. The sound on this album is hence both stunning and singular, with a vivid rendition of the musical personalities of the band, and a jungle of details to lose yourself in.
The compositions are all signed saxophonist and band leader Kjetil Møster. His 25 years as a musician and artist has been built on juggling a vast diversity of musical genres, and the work is clearly starting to bear fruits. Built on the same foundation as earlier; an amalgam of 1960's/1970's modal acoustic and electric jazz and 1970's experimental rock, the references might also echo brazilan music, doom, contemporary music, 1990's indie rock and metal, and nordic ambient house. An ear for the sonic connections between these genres and seamlessly morphing them into a singular band sound is one of the strong qualities of Springs.
The band lineup is still the same: Motorpsycho guitarist Hans Magnus 'Snah' Ryan; electric bass player of Elephant9 and Needlepoint Nikolai Hængsle; and Spidergawd and ex-Motorpsycho drummer Kenneth Kapstad are all displaying their extremely high level of musicianship and sensitivity to choosing the most suitable way if interpreting Møster's compositions. The band was called a 'super group' when it was founded, but while super groups are often short lived, this one is now in their 15th year together, still nurturing and developing a solid relationship.
Springs is released on Action Jazz, a label co-founded by Møster and King Midas frontman Ando Woltmann together with in-house designer Nick Alexander in 2003. Two releases found their way to the vinyl plants back then, before it faded behind Møster and Woltmann’s separate (and somtimes coinciding) artistry. Now, the release of a new Møster! album that has somewhat of a new musical direction, it felt as a natural occasion to restart the label, with the intention of more action filled releases to come. Action Jazz is GO!
First track from Springs, 'Dreaming Xaxado', is out on all digital platforms on July the 26th. A slowly evolving reimagination of the Brazilian music that permeates the country's very existence, processed through the Møster! filter.
